And in the beginning

I was born in Lindon Grange Hospital which is no longer standing, back in December of 1957.

As a child, a teenager and a young adult, I lived at number 10 Ford Lane, in the West End of Crewe. In those days that wasn't a bad thing. I had a lot of friends whom were all local children.

My first school was Adelaide Street Infants School. If my memory is correct, teachers were Mrs Lucas, Mrs Farnell and Mrs Barker (please feel free to contact me and offer other names).

After infants, I went to Beech Street Junior School. Teachers names that ring a bell there were, Mr Scholls, Mr Curtain, Mr Durber, Miss Bowie and Mr Wilson.

Before leaving Beech Street and moving on to Ludford Street Boys School, my mother did a runner and left my father to look after five kids on his own. I think he did one hell of a job and I freely admit that I couldn't have done that. I would have caved in and thrown the towel in.

It's fair to say that at the time, I didn't realise just what a huge task that must have been. Dad kept his job and although times were hard, we kept the house.

My dad is dead now, but I am so proud of what he did. I think of him as an unsung hero and I deeply regret not acknowledging his love and devotion when I had the chance.
